Q: How do I fix my 1998 buick fuel gage. It keeps changing from empty to full. What can be the problem?
I got a 1998 buick park avenue and I love it. I keep the fuel tank full but the fuel gage keeps changing from empty to full all the time. How can I fix that problem?

A: The fuel level sending unit in the gas tank is definitely a possibility as some of them do wear out over time and cause strange behavior. Another possibility is a wire from the gas tank sending unit is shorting out intermittently on some metal piece of the car (personal experience). Trace & follow the wiring and look for any cut or wear-thru in the wiring wherever it comes in contact with, or close to, any metal edges (mine was pinched between the gas tank bracket and the body of the car.) Best of luck.

Q: 1999 Buick Regal GS requires premium gas. Can I use a lower octane and supplement with Octane boost?
I just bought a 1999 Buick Regal GS, which is supercharged. It requires premium unleaded gas. I was curious if I could buy 87 or 89 octane and add a bottle of octane boost. This might be cheaper considering the price of gas these days. Any thoughts?

A: Octanes are suggested for optimal engine performance. You should use what it calls for to maintain a healthy motor. "Many high-performance engines are designed to operate with a high maximum compression and thus need a high quality (high energy) fuel usually associated with high octane numbers and thus demand high-octane premium gasoline. The power output of an engine depends on the energy content of its fuel, and this bears no simple relationship to the octane rating. A common understanding that may apply in only limited circumstances amongst petrol consumers is that adding a higher octane fuel to a vehicle's engine will increase its performance and/or lessen its fuel consumption; this may be false under most conditions — while engines perform best when using fuel with the octane rating for which they were designed and any increase in performance by using a fuel with a different octane rating is minimal or even imaginary, unless there are carbon hotspots, fuel injector clogging or other conditions that may cause a lean situation that can cause knocking that are more common in high mileage vehicles, which would cause modern cars to retard timing thus leading to a loss of both responsiveness and fuel economy. This also does not apply to turbocharged vehicles, which may be allowed to run greater advance in certain circumstances due to external temperatures."

Q: How much miles can one get from a Buick LeSabre?
The answer to this question is very important for me as I am thinking of buying a 1999 Buick LeSabre. I know a Honda and a Toyota can go upto 250K miles and a Lincoln can go even more, but how much can a Buick LeSabre go upto? What are the common problems found in a Buick LeSabre and is it very expensive to repair those? When should the timing/engine belt of a Buick LeSabre be changed and how often should the oil be changed? Any words of advice will be greatly appreciated.

A: Very reliable car. The only problems with these is the intake gasket leaking (about $400.00 repair) once it is repaired though it has no further problems. We have them come into the shop with 200,000 + miles all the time. They are a great road car. They even get about 30 MPG!!! Change the oil & rotate the tires every 5,000 miles and enjoy driving a comfortable American car that gets no attention from the cops. It is a good buy, go for it!!! Do be sure to have a BUICK DEALER look over the vehicle before you buy it. If this costs you $100.00 it is a wise decision, beware the bad cars/sales people of the world... do your part to insure your happines with the vehicle.

Q: What can I do to improve a 95 buick century?
Im driving around a 95 v-6 buick century until I get out of school, and was wondering what I can do to make it faster and better millage. I've changed the filters, new PVC valve and stuff like that. Just wondered if anything to the engine or like a cold air intake would work on this.

Q: Do you have any stats on how the Buick Century has had to have engine gaskets replaced due to Dex Cool coolant?
I have a 2003 Buick Century with v-6 engine. Are there any stats available on engine gaskets that have had to be replaced due to Dex Cool antifreeze? I just changed mine and put the regular green antifreeze in it. Is this ok?? Does anyone have any info on gaskets replacements on the century and how many miles were on them if so?

A: The intake gasket is a common leak on those when you replaced what gasket did you get? Felpro or OE are best as theyve redesigned the gasket. I've seen a number of these go bad i think this last summer alone we had to replace 4 or 5 of em at the shop i work at. As far as swapping antifreeze as long as you got all the dex cool out itll be fine to run the other stuff. But if you mixed em expect problems later on as they dont miss well and can cause more problems. And yes the dex cool was the cause it eats away at the gasket and the intake some of em had plastic intakes if yours does did you check it before putting it back on? We had to replace 2 intakes completely when we redid the gaskets.

Q: Where is the ignition coil located in a 1990 buick century?
Where is the ignition coil located in a 1990 buick century? They tell me mine is bad, I read how to change it, but can't find it inside the engine. If you don't know this but DO know where I can find free engine manuals I would be just as greatful. thanks.

A: I believe you will find it underneath the car/engine, probably near the middle but closer to the passenger side. This happened on my Mercury Sable, and hitting the coil with a hammer lightly would get it to work again temporarily. I got some strange looks in parking lots crawled under my car and banging away! I changed just the coil (which was cheap) and haven't had a problem since (over a year ago, now), even though the mechanic tried to tell me I needed to change the whole starter motor as well!

Q: How much hub bearing play should be in my Buick front wheel bearings?
Slight play is felt both front wheels with wheels off the ground. 99 Buick Park Avenue.

A: There should be no play in either the bearings or the tie rods. Grab the wheel at 3 and 9 oclock shake side to side, that is usually tie rods, if it's at 12 and 6 then it's the bearings.

Q: What vehicle model parts are compatable with a 1992 Buick century?
Ok i got a big problem i customized my 1992 buick century with a tree at 60mph. Now my brothers are machanics. I am wondering what vehicle model parts are compatable with my car. Its a GM car so i think some other gm parts will work. WHAT I NEED Back axle front a arm front half shaft.

A: olds., and pontiac parts sometimes can fit, depending on the years.

Q: Where is the starter relay located on a 1996 buick regal?
I have an intermittant starting issue on a Buick Regal. I checked for power at the starter solenoid when the key was in crank, but no dice. Most vehicles have a starter relay that is energised by the key which in turn energised the starter solenoid. Does anyone know where this may be located? I can't find it.

A: on all the gm vehicles i have ever seen, they do not use a relay to control starter activity. instead they use a solenoid which is very similar in function but quite the same shape. the solenoid is located on the starter it self. if you fallow the positive wire all the way down to the starter you will find that the wire is bolted to the solenoid.

Q: buick lesabre revving while driving takes a while to accelerate?
My girlfriends 90s buick lesabre does this thing often when you push on the gas instead of making it go faster it just starts revving and it takes it a little while before it starts to accelerate. What could this be?

A: Trans is going out on you.

Q: How do I fix my 2004 Buick Rendezvous bouncy suspension?
The suspension on my 2004 Buick Rendezvous is very soft and it bounces like a moonbuggy. Any ideas on how I can get it tightened?

A: Have a mechanic install new shocks/struts. These control the rebound on the suspension, and when they wear out your car will bounce a bit more. One way to test if your shocks/struts need to be replaced is to push down that corner of your car with your body, then let go; your car should pop right back up to its normal height and stop without any further motion. BE CAREFUL not to crumple your fender when performing this test, though.

Q: How do I replace a 1993 Buick Riviera ignition key?
Hi there, last year I purchased a used 1993 Buick Riviera from a dealer here in Bristol, and just recently the keys have gone missing. I have replacement keys for the trunk and doors, but without a special chip key I have no way to start the car. Is there any way I can get a replacement? If so, how much will it cost?

A: The dealer should be able to cut you a new key using the VIN. It will be quite expensive, I had a key made for my Ford Focus, and it was like $130 or so.
