Q: Chevrolet Malibu?
Is the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu LT for 10,000 dollars with 40,000 Mileage a good buy? Is it a good car also?

A: I've been fixing cars for almost 25 years. If it were up to me, everyone would drive Malibus. I stick with Toyota. And I know how to spell CAMRY! And M-A-L-I-B-U.

Q: How can I disconnect the anti-theft device installed on my Chevrolet Malibu?
Can anyone please guide me where I could get an owners' Manual for Chevrolet (Malibu). I bought a 1998 model and the anti-theft device installed in it sometimes switches on automatically as if I am stealing my own car. I would like to disconnect it as no mechanic here knows how to do it. Many thanks to you Jim. It really worked and now no trouble with the anti-theft device.

A: You need to cut the yellow wire going to the Passlock resistor at the ignition cylinder, while it's running...the security light will stay on (unless you remove the bulb), but the annoying 10-15 minute delay in starting will go away...info, with pics, below... http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=3684316&postcount=5

Q: What would make an ABS brake light come on the dash of a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu?
I have a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu and every once in a while the ABS brake light comes up on my dash...and then it will go out for a day or so and then come back on again.

A: ABS is computer controlled. It is performing a continuous check on itself to assure proper operation in case of an accident. An intermittent ABS light may be a minor issue but should be looked at immediately given its importance. The potential failures are numerous so I can't guess. Good Luck!

Q: 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, factory welds on the drivers side seat track have failed, dealer says its not covered u?
I have a 2005 Chevrolet malibu, the drivers seat track welds have failed. Dealer says its not covered..what now?

A: The only leverage they have is that your probably out of warranty. To keep you in good customer relations and possible repeat sales, they should take care of it.Your next step is to contact the area representative to get some leverage about a safety issue. You have a rare case but there could be a whole line of cars that were built that week that may have the same problem.

Q: How much can I get out of my car? It's a 2001 Chevy Chevrolet Malibu.?
I am thinking of selling my 2001 Chevrolet Malibu (it has about 130,000 miles on it) because it is leaking antifreeze. It did this once before and eventually the head gaskets blew & head cracked. I had to spend about $600 to get it fixed, and now it is happening again. I don't know if I should sell it or buy a new motor, so I have a few questions: 1. How much could I get out of my car if I sell it in the condition it is in? It has 130,000 miles on it. 2. If I decided to buy a new motor, where would I buy it from and how much would it cost? 3. Is there anywhere I could buy wrecked cars? I'm sure I could get a wrecked 01 Malibu and put the motor from it into my car. 4. I have heard that all 01 Malibus have poorly built motors. Is this true? 5. What should I do? Sell my car & buy a whole new car or just get a new motor for my car? Thank you guys!!

A: If your car came with the 3100 motor, then they are well known to have problems with the Lower Intake Manifold or LIM gasket. 1. Depends really on the overall condition of the car, and how much a perspective buyer was willing to pay for it. 2.You can get remanufactured motors for your car from places like Jasper and similar companies. They are usually in the phone book under 'auto parts, used'. 3. Do a search for rebuildable cars on the internet. They usually are fairly priced, but the shipping may be a pain, plus you end up having another car to get rid of. 4. Like I said above, the V6s had gasket issues, but if your car came with "Dex-Cool" antifreeze in it, get it removed, and replace it with standard green coolant. That dex-cool stuff is pure garbage. 5.This is your choice. If you have the technical know-how to do it yourself, then do a motor swap or get the current one rebuilt. If you are just trying to cut your losses, sell it and buy a different car. GM has addressed the manifold gasket issue, and as long as the new gaskets are metal, they will hold up better. Also, do not run Dex-Cool in your car, even if it came from the factory like that. It is junk and eats metal parts due to electrolysis. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Q: How much will it cost to replace the transmission (Automatic - Chevrolet Malibu 1999)?
How much will it cost to replace the transmission ?? or fix transmission... I know that sometimes can be $5 and sometimes $1000... so Im looking for some pricing of fixing or/and replacing transmission in Chevrolet Malibu 1999.... Im looking for full price if replacing (parts and labor) .... I know that maybe this is not gonna be worthy to replace transmission but oo welll.... I need to do something

A: GO TO THIS WEBSITE ( http://www.car-part.com/index.htm ) AND LOOK FOR YOUR TRANSMISSION. PRICES RANGE FROM 75.00 TO 1000.00 FOR A USED TRANS. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF TRANS FOR YOUR CAR AVAILABLE WHICH IS GOOD FOR YOU. IT MAKES THEM CHEAPER!! THESE ARE USED TRANS BUT MOST ARE JUST AS GOOD AS BEING REBUILT. CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL MECHANIC AND SEE HOW MUCH LABOR WILL BE. SHOULDN'T BE MORE THAN 5 OR 600 DOLLARS. GOOD LUCK AND REMEMBER USED PARTS SAVE MONEY!!

Q: Anybody have problems with their 2000 Chevrolet Malibu overheating?
Our Chevy Malibu has been overheating anytime we drive it further than 2 or 3 miles. We already replaced the thermostat and the coolant cap, and added water/coolant. That didn't help. I've asked around and it seems that it could be the water pump or the head gasket. Anybody else run into this problem? What did it cost to have it repaired? Thanks everybody for the suggestions! I'll check with my husband later and go over all this with him.

A: That car overheating that quickly I would lean towards a water pump. If it's not addressed before overheating it real bad it will be a head gasket.

Q: Where can I complain about problems I am having with my 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?
I have had a couple of problems with my Chevrolet Malibu that I just bought three weeks ago. I took it to the dealer and they "weren't covered under my warranty" because they were more expensive than my dealer wanted to pay. But I have heard many people who drive the same car with the same problems. Does anyone know where I can go to complain about the issue I am having and maybe Chevrolet will do something about it?

A: Chevrolet has regional and national offices, to handle customer service and warranty issues.. under "contact us" on their website Did you buy the extended warranty?

Q: Fuel guage problem on a 98 Chevrolet Malibu?
I am an ASE certified mechanic. I relaced the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets in a 98 Chevrolet Malibu, with a 3.1. We all know these had a problem from the get go. After replacing the gaskets, the fuel guage went all the way around and pegged at the BOTTOM side of the stop. Any ideas what caused this, and how to fix? I haven't had a guage act like this before!

A: All gauges are in a balance circuit, variation coming from resistance in the sender. Older units required a single wire with the resistor in the tank as balance. Open circuit and the gauge pegs and might burn out from excessive voltage. Another circuit will balance only one coil in the gauge. I would say you have cut off a wire, or broken a plug @ the firewall. Probably putting too much weight on it while working on the engine. When you find the problem you will probably need to replace the dash gauge too. Best I can do from here.

Q: Anyone know much about the Chevrolet Malibu?
Are they good cars? Dependable? I am in the market for a used car and the Malibu seems to get good reliability ratings (at least the 2002 model does) Anyone know anything about these cars?

A: For the most part I will go with Andy on this. If you get this car and the lower intake is leaking, I would replace it and then flush the coolant and install regular green anti-freeze. Dex-cool is junk and the only reason that GM still uses it is because if they say it is junk, they will lose a lot of money from lawsuits for having to replace it and reimburse people for the damaged parts.

Q: Is the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu a car you'd consider?
I really like the new re-designed look. I personally didn't really care for the Malibu generation's before this. My Aunt has one and I found the seats to be very uncomfortable, atleast the back seats anyway. What is your opinion of this car?

A: I think it's a great looking car. Haven't been in one yet to tell you about the rest of the package.

Q: How to turn off the headlamps on my chevrolet malibu 1999?
I've been trying to turn them off without succes at all,,,,I turn the thing to where it says off and they still stay on,,,,what could I do?

A: they automatically come on when you crank the car, but if you want to turn them off while you are parked or something, just slightly raise your emergency brake just a little and they will go off.

Q: how many miles does a 1999 chevrolet malibu last?
i'm looking into buying a 1999 chevy malibu. it's very well maintenenced and kept up with. very clean and hasn't ever been in an accident. although, the mileage on it is 129,000, or so. does anybody know if this car will even last me much longer?

A: How long a car lasts depends on two major factors; the initial quality of the vehicle and regular maintaince. You are ahead of the game in that you mention that the car has been well maintained. Continue a regular routine of preventive maintenance, oil & filter changes, fuel filter and transmission fluid changes, etc. The 1999 Malibu had good reports for initial vehicle quality and reliability. So this is also a plus. If maintained as suggested, you should be able to get more than 200,000 miles out of this car. Good luck.

Q: Is it possible to change the instrument cluster in a Chevrolet Malibu?
I need to change my cluster as my other one is dead, i see some in the US and Canada on ebay but they are in miles.. though one is in KM but is too high and doesnt reflect my vehicle. Is it possible to change the cluster myself if I buy one on ebay, do I have to reprogram anything? thanks The cluster / instrument panel is digital.

A: wht year malibu? you can change them but i believe if it is a newer vehicle you need a tech II scanner to get the right mileage on the used/new one.
