Q: Pontiac sunfire??
i ahve a 97' sunfire. when u start it the pontiac letters light up in the back. (is it normal) also when i put it in drive the lights turn on. whats wrong i shows a yellow high beak light on the dash then when u turn the headlgihts on it goes away. i thoguht they were the high beams but then when i pulle the signal lever back to turn the off i got a blue high beam signal in the ... i think tachometer. What are these lgihts????? Thank you

A: That's all normal. My 2004 does the same thing, except the DRL (daytime running lights) light is green and on the right side of the cluster and the high beam light is on the left

Q: What is the Dependablility of a Pontiac Sunfire?
I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire 4Door SE. It has 117,000 miles. I give it regular oil changes, and it was given a tune up last year. The only thing I had to replace on it was the alternator at 90,000 miles, and break pads and rotors. On occassion it'll run funny (a little rough), but most of the time it purrs like a kitten. I've had the car for 3 years. I'm debating whether or not to trade the car in for a Honda since my experience with Honda's is their made to run on high miles (i've had a honda before). How dependable is a Sunfire on high miles? Should I trade it in?

A: if you change the oil on a regular basis ( every 3,000 miles) then it will last well over 300,000 miles, mine currently has 313,000 miles and it has not had any major engine work yet, still runs like new.

What is the recommended/(usual practice) mileage at which a timing belt change is recommended/mandatory on a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire? Also, what is the normal mileage interval on changing the Transmission fluid on 2003 Sunfire?

A: The Timing belt should be done at around 80,000 miles. It should be listed in your owners manual. Also, the transmission fluid I recommend being done at 30,000 miles. This is a great thing to do to extend the life of your transmission greatly!

Q: How to fix a 1996 Pontiac sunfire radio light?
I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire, and the radio light has burnt out. I checked the manual and can't find anything about it. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

A: Check the fuse for the dome lamp. Even if it's good they're known to do weird things. Good Luck!

Q: How much to replace the air conditioner for a Pontiac Sunfire?
We have a pretty good local mechanic. I say pretty good and not excellent because he isn't free. HA. Takes him a bit longer but there is a savings.. We have an older pontiac sunfire 2001 that suddenly lost the airconditioning from last summer to this summer...possibly during some of the really cold winter months we had here cracked a line or something? I talked to my mechanic today and he said it could be up to $1500 to replace the evaporator, or - he could use a seal product from Canada and charge it for under $300...but he was going to put it under 50% charge tomorrow and make sure the leak is on the high side and not the low. If it is on the low side, he will charge it so we can use it this summer (or the rest of it), and then next spring sell the car as planned without it working or at least with a disclaimer that it will need recharged regularly. So my questions are: Does this all sound right? What should I do?

A: Forget the owners manual, it will just tell you where the switch is and where the bulb indicator is. Get a repair manual, which you can buy in most auto supply stores, for GM 1997, or specifically for your sun-fire model. All questions will be answered.

Q: How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?
i drive a 2.2 L 1997 pontiac sunfire. how do i cahnge the spark plug wires. i know where they start and where they end i just can't get to the coils. how can i cahnge them?

A: Since the coils are located on the backside of the engine, they're very difficult to reach. (but obviously, you already know that) Make sure the engine is cool before you start so you won't get burned. I have a 1997 Cavalier with the 2.2L which is essentially the same car. When I changed my plug wires, I had to reach down between where the power steering pump and the A/C receiver/dryer is. There's very little room and I pretty much had to do everything by feel because you can't see down where you're sticking your arm. Change each individual plug wire one at a time so you won't accidently get them hooked up wrong or crossed. Take your time and be patient...it won't be easy. I'm a big guy and my forearms are big so it was difficult for me to get my arm into that small space. It'll be easier for someone with thinner forearms. From what I can tell, that's the ONLY access to the coil. You can't even reach it from the underside. Good luck!

I have a 1996 pontiac sunfire it has 180,000 miles on it. The check engine and radiator light continuously stayed on and was driving fine. One day while driving up a hill the car just putted and then everything just shut off. I tried to get a jump but the car would not turn over. Any suggestions?

A: I am not a mechanic, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night... (sorry for the joke) But I think your engine may be fried. I suspect you may have fried your head gasket. Is there a temperature gauge in your car? If so where was it sitting, if it was running hot then you almost for sure fried your head gasket and maybe even your engine. I think you may have a decision to make, do you want to pump more money into a car that has 180,000 miles on it or do you want to start over? I've been in the same boat before, good luck!

Q: How Much is it to cost to fix a Broken gas guage on a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire?
I have a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire and the fuel gauge is all out of whack. The gauge need is pass the full mark and bend back to the speedometer numbers (the fuel gauge is on the right of the speedometer). I really want this fixed. This is the only thing wrong. What could be the problem and how much could it cost?

A: Your best bet would be to go to a local junk yard and get another cluster. It may just be your needle... that would be the cheapest option. the other option would be one of your fuel sensors are out of whack...and thats not fun to drop the tank (or cheap) lol I'd try a new cluster first...

Q: What is faster a 2000 pontiac grand am or sunfire?
My brother is going to be 16 in febuary and has baught a pontiac sunfire and i have a grand am, both 2000s. I am a very competitive person and wanted to now wich is faster and accelerates better. If it is faster what would i have to do to make myne faster than his. Thanks for the help =]

A: Both cars are slow, even the Grand Am GT. If you wanted a fast car you should have got something else. BTW a 2000 5-speed sunfire would beat a 4-cyl Grand Am, and a V6 automatic Grand Am would beat the sunfire.

Q: Can my Pontiac Sunfire pull a loaded 5x8 trailer across the country?
I am moving from Canada to Las Vegas and have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, so obviously it will be a long journey. I have just rented a 5ft by 8ft covered uhual trailer in which I planned pulling by my car. I plan on loading it with a queen sized Box spring and mattress, small sofa, 2 chairs, and other misc. things. Could anyone advise me as to whether this would exceed my towing capacity?

A: Na i wouldnt recomend it thats a long way to travel. your car is rated at about prob 140 hp off a 2.2.liter right? you will most likey bust somthing in the engine if you dont burn out ur transmison first and then youd be really screwed.

What is the best way to replace the dimmer switch on a 1998 Pontiac sunfire w/cruisecontrol and does the whole sterring column have to be pulled or can I just drop the base cover on the column?

A: just base cover steering wheel and airbag. one screw and the lever comes off letting into the switch. be sure to pull air bag fuse and disconnect wiring to it. go to autozone .com and click on choose a vehicle then repair info then repair guide for a free book to look at.
